Basic Patent Statistics

Location: The United States Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) is located in Alexandria, Virgina.

Examiner Corps: The USPTO currently has 6,055 patent examiners. 1,211 new patent examiners were trained in 2008.

Number of Patent Applications: An estimated 464,541 patent applications were filed with the USPTO in 2008. The approximate number of patent applications filed by California residents in 2007 is 63,027.

Quality: The USPTO has achieved an allowance compliance rate of 96.3 % and an in-process compliance rate of 92.5%.

Timeliness: The USPTO also achieved an average first action pendency of 25.6 months and an average total pendency of 32.2 months for all applications. The average first action pendency data is measured from the filing date of a patent application to the first action. The average total pendency is measured from the filing date until the application is issued as a patent or abandoned by the applicant.

Technology Center: Examiners are grouped by technology centers. Each technology center examines certain types of technical inventions. Transportation, Construction, Agriculture and Electronic Commerce inventions are assigned to Technology Center 3600 which had an average first action pendency of 24.3 months and a total average pendency of 34.8 months. Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing and Products inventions are assigned to Technology Center 3700 which had an average first action pendency of 24.7 months and a total average pendency of 32.7 months.
