Delivery systems, treatment devices, diagnostic tools, and therapeutic methods are all patentable, and all fiercely competed over, especially as new drug approvals continue at a steady pace of roughly 46 a year (FDA data via NCBI).

My Experience in Pharmaceuticals & Therapeutics Patents

Granted: Patent No. US 8,167,866. A method for speeding up how a drug or fluid gets absorbed into the systemic circulation once it’s injected under the skin, aimed at a specific targeted tissue. Faster, more reliable subcutaneous absorption matters a lot for how quickly a therapy actually takes effect.
Pending: Application No. US 2021/0308162. A set of newly discovered compounds that inhibit TLR4, a receptor involved in the body’s inflammatory response, for use in treating infectious, inflammatory, and post-traumatic disorders. This is a compound and method-of-treatment application, at the core of what most people picture when they think “pharma patent.”
I’ve also secured patents for devices with a direct therapeutic application, even where they’re classified under a different primary industry on this site. I’m including them here as related, adjacent examples:
Granted: Patent No. US 9,778,490. Therapeutic eyewear built from a transparent lens material that selectively filters light. Beyond basic eye protection and comfort, the material is tuned to transmit more of certain wavelengths that carry a therapeutic benefit, such as light believed to support healing or mood.
Pending: Application No. US 2025/0325444. A probe-and-electrical-driver system for accurately locating acupuncture points on the body, so a clinician can apply a pulsed electric current to the correct spot rather than relying on estimation.
