Automotive patents are especially difficult to apply for, get, defend, and prosecute. Many technologies have been developed over the last 100+ years, and much of that technology has been patented. Many patent holders (or infringing parties) are household names: giant, well-funded car manufacturers, with their own patent attorneys.
For you, the inventor, it takes significant technical ability or insight just to think of a device or process that is truly new – let alone to produce it. For your patent attorney, it takes an engineering background and experience in automotive patents to determine whether your invention is in fact new, to zero in on exactly what aspects of it are new, and to determine the best way to protect those unique elements so that you can profit from them.
As an Orange County-based patent attorney since 2004 and an engineer before then, I have helped automotive inventors apply for and be granted many patents. You can see some of those granted patents here (type “vehicle” in the search feature). One memorable automotive patent was a tire pressure maintenance device that relies on a small wheel-mounted compressor powered only by electromagnetic charge to keep tires inflated at the optimum PSI. Another was a pickup truck bed extension that adds storage capacity to the back of a pickup. I also defend patents and prosecute patents in the automotive industry.
A few examples of automotive patents that I’ve worked on:
- Automobiles with a radiant barrier (freepatentsonline.com/8361260.html)
- Windshield touch and clean system (freepatentsonline.com/9963118.html)
- Mega elongator (freepatentsonline.com/10029741.html)

- Tire carrier apparatus (freepatentsonline.com/7303222.html)
- Engine with desmodromically actuated rocker (freepatentsonline.com/7870842.html)
