Optical products and systems often require knowledge from multiple fields to think of, design, manufacture, market, and patent. Typically involving lenses, an optical device or system may be medical, recreational, photography-related, for a sensor, or for a safety feature. The patent may involve the lens itself or components that support or interact with the lens. Because lenses have existed for so many centuries and tie in with so many industries, there is a significant amount of “prior art” to contend with when seeking a patent for your eyewear or other optical invention. For that reason, your patent application or defense must be crafted with the same precision as your invention is.
As an Orange County-based patent attorney since 2004 and an engineer before then, I have helped optical product inventors apply for and be granted many patents. A few examples of optical patents my clients have been granted:
- A glasses lens that blocks out harmful wavelengths of light while allowing through more-therapeutic wavelengths of light.
- An anti-fog mechanism for goggles.
- A device for easily attaching various lenses to one’s goggles of choice.
- A device for keeping eyeglasses securely on the wearer, both when the glasses are over one’s eyes and when the glasses are hanging below the chin or above the head.
