The City of Irvine is the hub of the patent community within Orange County, California based on the number of patents granted to residents and businesses of the neighboring cities.
Irvine residents and businesses were recently granted at least TEN (10) times the number of patents compared to residents and businesses of neighboring cites based on the 2010 numbers. For 2011, based on the rate of patents granted for the period between January to October, the patent community of Irvine is expected to still outpace the surrounding cities by about the same margin. The closest cities to come close to Irvine are Santa Ana, Lake Forest, Newport Beach and Aliso Viejo.

Of the 1444 patents granted to Irvine residents and businesses in 2010, 62% of the patents were granted to Broadcom, Inc.; 35% were granted to other Irvine businesses; and 3% were granted to Irvine residents. Even without Broadcom, Inc., Irvine residents and businesses were still granted four (4) times more patents compared to the residents and businesses of neighboring cities.
Through the recession, Irvine businesses continued to procure patents at an elevated pace and for the past two years has exceeded pre-recession numbers. In the table below, Broadcom’s numbers were subtracted from Irvine’s total numbers to show the general trend in Irvine.
